Winter service, emergency kit, and driving tips from Carbone Honda of Bennington

It won't be long before we have our first snow fall, and at Carbone Honda of Bennington in Bennington VT our service center is ready to help keep your vehicle safer during slick driving conditions.

Here are some vehicle services we offer

Tires: make sure your vehicle is properly outfitted with winter tires. You can order them through us if you don't already have a set and then schedule an appointment to have them put on. The sooner you get this done the better, so don't wait until you hear about the first major storm on the news to try to squeeze in an appointment.

Wipers & Fluids: wipers can go overlooked, so if you haven't changed yours in the past six months, we suggest doing so ahead of the snowfall! A good set of wipers also works in tandem with proper washer fluid. Make sure you've gotten the right one for the cooler temperatures and that you're topped of. You can order genuine fluids and wiper inserts/blades through our parts center.

Battery: the last thing you want in the winter — aside from going off the road — is a dead battery. It can be a frustrating and/or dangerous situation, and it's one that can be avoided by bringing your vehicle into our service center where our techs can test out the battery's strength. If necessary, they can order you a new one.

Heating: a warm car cabin is the perfect respite during the winter, so it's important to make sure your heating system is working. If it feels a little off, we can diagnose the problem and make sure it's not an issue once the temperatures really start to fall.

Oil Changes: there's nothing that says you need to change your oil before a certain season, but if you're almost due we suggest taking care of it before winter is officially here. The reason being that cold temps, bad roads, and weekends spent at the mountain can often get in the way of making an appointment, so get it out of the way now.

The Winter Kit

Do you have a winter kit in the cargo area of your car? If not, then you should! You can order pre-made kits from organizations like AAA or you can put together your own. Key features include:

  • A collapsible shovel
  • Portable traction pads or kitty litter in case you slide into a ditch
  • A flashlight and matches
  • Emergency foil blanket or old blanket from your house
  • Extra gloves/hats/scarves
  • Water and high-energy snacks
  • Reflective road triangles
  • Jumper cables or a portable battery pack

Safe Winter Driving Tips

It's important to make sure your car is fully serviced for the winter and that you have a kit in case of emergencies. That said, having proper driving skills is equally important! Here are some things to keep in mind as you travel on winter roads:

  • Don’t use cruise control on wet, slippery, or snow-covered roads
  • Increase the distance between your car and others from 3-4 seconds to 8-10 seconds
  • Don't slam on the pedals or the brake; gently press down or release
  • If you can, find an empty parking lot to see how your brakes react with slippery conditions
  • Make sure you keep your gas tank more than half-full to prevent freezing and cracking
  • Don't warm up your car in the garage!

Lastly, remember that it's okay to stay off the roads if they're really bad! Pretty much anything can wait until the roads are cleared hours later.
